Vascular Lab in Metro Phoenix Area
The vascular lab at Arizona Vein and Laser Institute was opened in 2017 utilizing the state of the art technology and equipment to take care of our patients suffering from peripheral arterial disease. There are two locations in the valley to serve — one in Surprise and the other in Chandler. Our Surprise facility has four beds and can accommodate multiple surgical procedures at a given time.
Diagnosis & Procedures
Peripheral arterial disease also known as PAD for short is primarily caused by family history or genetics, high cholesterol levels, lifestyle reasons such as smoking, lack of regular exercise contributing to obesity, and lastly uncontrolled diabetes, just to name a few. The doctor utilizes simple diagnostic tools to evaluate the problem after taking down the history & physical.
ABI
Ankle-brachial index gives the doctor the difference in pressure.
Pedal Pulses
The doctor will feel your pedal pulses to see if there is any indication to do further work up
Arterial Ultrasound
This is very simple and quick. The patient will undergo arterial scanning which takes 40 min to determine the velocity of the blood flow.
Angiogram
An Angiogram will be recommended by your surgeon at Arizona vein and laser if any of the above-mentioned tests indicate or suspicion of PAD exists. Angiogram or CT scan is a more conclusive tool that precisely points out the location of calcification in the arteries.
Angioplasty
In relation to Vascular Stenting utilizes a balloon-tipped catheter that opens a blocked blood vessel to improve blood flow.
The doctor utilizes medical imaging to direct the catheter into the blocked artery. The inflated balloon opens the vessel resulting in improved blood flow.
Athrectomy
The procedure is a minimally invasive, catheter-based treatment used for atherosclerosis and peripheral artery disease related to the lower extremities of the legs, feet or ankles. The treatment goal is to clear the blocked artery in specific areas where there is blood flow to tissues. With the absence of proper blood flow, lower extremity muscles begin to cramp and lose strength.
Stent
Vascular specialists can recommend peripheral artery angioplasty and stenting to open up blocked arteries to restore blood flow into the legs again. The angioplasty procedure is performed on a catheterization laboratory, also known in a hospital as a “cath lab,”. Patients remain awake throughout the procedure with local anesthesia while a stent is utilized to open up blood flow.

The surgeon will perform one or a combination of these procedures at our vascular lab under moderate sedation as same-day surgery. If successful this will help to restore the blood flow. You will not be required to stay overnight. It takes two to three hours in the surgery area and then you will be moved to the post-op observation room under the supervision of a nurse. The surgeon performs your procedure along with an MD anesthesiologist. These are moderately invasive procedures and so the recovery takes about three to four days.
